I’m Ama Opare, a plant-based lifestyle coach, author, chef, and graphic designer. I have been 100% vegan since 2007 with periods of up to a year eating totally raw. This year I turned 62 and due to my healthy diet and lifestyle, I feel better than I did when I was in my late 40s. I drink lots of water, avoid alcohol, spend lots of time outside, and count my blessings every day. My goal is to age well and stay active. My grandmother was 108 when she passed and continued to walk vigorously everyday well into her 100s.
We made our #blaxit and moved to Arusha Tanzania in East Africa in July 2016. Being here has been good for my soul. I have found it harder to stay raw although I eat plenty of raw fruit on a daily basis. Salad greens are harder to get and many of the ingredients I used to use in the states are unavailable or are very expensive.
Keeping a journal is a key part of helping me be more consistent with my healthy lifestyle that includes a morning routine of walking, Qi Gong, yoga and prayer. By using a habit tracker, making note of my behaviors and how I feel, it allows me to stay aware of how my choices impact me. I have talked about journaling on my YouTube channel and recommend keeping a journal for all my coaching clients because of its power to both identify what works and what doesn’t, as well as to develop self accountability.
For years I WANTED to be vegetarian (I didn’t even know about vegan then) but I didn’t know how. I’d go to the food co-op and try to figure out what I should buy. When I got home I struggled to make it taste good! And everything was cheese, cheese, cheese!
I was over weight, worried about my health and I couldn’t control my cravings for burgers and fries. I’d scarf them down greedily, and then feel terrible about my self! I couldn’t figure out what was driving my cravings. I felt helpless and didn’t know what to do to keep from spinning out of control. My day-to-day life was surrounded by meat eaters and I didn’t know where to turn for help.
I am eternally grateful to my husband Nana Kwaku Opare, MD, MPH, CA, a physician and dietitian for inspiring me and encouraging me to make the switch to a vegan lifestyle. We had known each other decades ago in high school and college and reconnected in 2007. He opened the door to a new way of life for me and I’ve never looked back. We rekindled an old flame and in 2010 we were married.
We created the Opare Institute to help our patients and clients reverse or prevent chronic disease through healthy diet and lifestyle. Your body has an incredible power to heal itself. A plant-based diet is one part of making that possible.
We offer coaching, supervised just fasting, nutritional consultations, and training worldwide. Our first Vegan Healing Retreat will be here in Arusha Tanzania in November-December 2020.
As a plant-based lifestyle coach I guide my clients through the Thrive Framework, a proven, simple to follow framework to FIND WHAT WORKS FOR YOU so you can stick to eating healthy and your healthy habit goals.
